Second life for fleet maintenance materials

By Team Writer / December 25, 2016

The Fleet and Material Management Unit supports the Department of Transportation’s fleet and material needs for the operation of the state’s transportation system by providing reliable fleet and materials in a timely and cost-effective manner. Fleet Support purchases all shop equipment for our repair facilities and assists in maintaining the shops.

Key Takeaways:

  • A constant battle waged in fleets today is the clash between the seemingly competing initiatives of profitability and sustainability. It appears that in this situation, one has to be at the expense of the other.
  • Cattle ranchers build wind breaks out of them, demolition companies use them as blast mats, etc.
  • One warehouse manager painted old railroad rail yellow and bolted them out 24” from his warehouse walls to act as a “bumper” to keep forklifts and vehicles from crashing into the warehouse walls.
